I Passed My Level 1 Sommelier Test!
The last time you saw me around here, I was starting to study for my Level 1 Sommelier test through the Court of Master Sommeliers. It’s one of the hardest things that I’ve done in a long time. So when I finally learned that I passed, I felt an amazing sense of accomplishment.
What made the test so hard was studying for it. There are only 70 questions on the test and it’s all theory. However, those questions could be anything. Without knowing exactly what would be asked, I made sure I learned everything I possibly could about all the major wine growing areas including the grapes, soil, etc. It was a lot of information to juggle in my brain. I haven’t had to study anything in at least 15 years! Three books and 200 flashcards later, I finally felt prepared (for the most part).
When I finally saw the test, I knew that I would pass it. It was easy by comparison to all of the information that I’d jammed in my brain. I was extremely relieved. We received the results that same day. After snagging my certificate and pin, I raced home so that I could head to the airport to go to Accra. That left very little time for allowing it to all sink in.
However, I’m celebrating this week in Rome, Italy with all the pasta and wine that I can handle. Once I get back home, it’s time to start studying for Level 2.
What this experience has taught me is that it’s never to late to learn or start something. It’s also extremely gratifying when you achieve something that you’ve worked really hard for.
